Propolis – Nature’s Gift from the Hive for Health & Well-Being

Understanding Bee Resin – From Harvest to Skincare & Nutrition

Explore Our Products

Propolis – also known as bee resin or “bee glue” – is a remarkable substance produced by honey bees from a blend of plant resins, beeswax and salivary secretions. Within the hive, it serves as a protective sealant, closing small gaps and crevices. Its composition and colour vary depending on the botanical source and the region in which it is harvested.

Remmele’s Propolis draws upon carefully selected raw materials and many years of hands-on expertise. On this page, you will discover what propolis is, how its quality is achieved, and how to distinguish between topical skincare and dietary supplementation. Further guidance on tolerability and EU-compliant communication can be found below.

What Is Propolis – A Brief Overview

Nature & Function: A resinous blend crafted by bees to seal and protect the hive.

Typical Composition (raw propolis, approx.): ~50 % resins & balsams, ~30 % wax, ~10 % essential oils, ~5 % pollen, remainder minerals & organic compounds (variations subject to local flora).

Variability: The chemical profile of propolis is strongly influenced by its botanical sources and local climate – making rigorous quality control an essential consideration.

What Are the Applications of Propolis?

Topical & Cosmetic Use: Creams, balms, sprays, solutions and lip care preparations.

Purpose: a nourished feeling of the skin, a protective layer and everyday comfort – free from any medicinal claims.

Dietary Supplementation: Drops (also available in alcohol-free formulations) & capsules.

Please note: In the European Union, no authorised health claims exist for propolis itself; such claims are permitted solely for added nutrients with established authorisation – for example, Vitamin C carrying an approved health claim.

Quality Indicators Worth Considering

  1. Origin of Raw Materials & Standardisation (batch-specific analysis, e.g. resin-typical marker compounds).
  2. Formulation & Purpose: a clear distinction between cosmetic application (topical) and dietary supplementation (internal use).
  3. Transparency: product label imagery, INCI listings & ingredient declarations, usage and application guidance, and where applicable, clear indication of alcohol-free formulations for drops.
  4. Made in Germany, and cruelty-free – trusted quality indicators where applicable.

Tolerability & Important Notes

  • Contact allergies may occur, as with other natural substances such as Peru balsam or arnica. Those with sensitive skin are advised to conduct a patch test prior to use; individuals with a known sensitivity to propolis should exercise particular caution.
  • Cosmetic Products: For external use only, in accordance with the respective product instructions.
  • Dietary Supplements: Please adhere strictly to the recommended intake; no disease-related claims are made. Permissible health claims are defined by the EU Register and EFSA – none of which are currently authorised for propolis itself.
